Finishing up the Plant Unit

I think this short cartoon does a great job of explaining what goes on when a plant is growing.

We finished up our sunlight experiment. Blaze removed the felt cover on the planter to find that most of the seeds that had not received sunlight, had not grown.

The seeds that had sprouted had grown towards the light.

If you want to see how this project started, it was on this post:
Plant Projects

This young alligator was laying on the path in front of our garden when we went out to check on the basil seedlings. He was about 3 feet long.

I lost my gardening help pretty quickly because of the alligator. Blaze had been told not to go near it, but he went running towards it anyway and DH took him home since he couldn't listen.

The woman who has the garden next to ours called campus security on her cellphone and we waited a long time for them to show up and escort this little guy back to the lake, but they never showed up. I guess with graduation going on right now, a baby alligator is not really a high priority for them. Our concern was mostly for the alligator, because graduation has caused the traffic on the road between the gardens and the lake to become quite heavy.

We're not really giving up our plant lessons completely, because we still have plenty of work to do in the garden, but Blaze has expressed an interest in learning about birds, since I came home with the bird guide for him, so that will be our next science unit for homeschooling.

  2. DH posted those same pictures of the alligator in a folder titled, "an alligator in the garden" on his Facebook account and someone left a comment asking if that was a euphemism.

  3. Oh my goodness, what a treat to have such a visitor. Such different wildlife down there than we have in Ohio! Although there was an alligator in a park pond last year, but some dope thought the alligator would make a good pet. People just don't get it sometimes.
