National Archeology Day at Lake Jackson Mounds

DH had to work today at Lake Jackson Mounds Archaeological Park for the National Archeology Day event, so we packed a picnic and went along.

It was a four-hour event and DH had been worried that we wouldn't find enough things to keep us busy for all that time, but that really wasn't a problem. There were children's activities, lectures, a very small dig to help with, and beautiful nature trails.

Public Archaeology Day at Kingsley Plantation 2012

It was a very wet Public Archaeology Day at Kingsley Plantation. This was how the day began:



It then rained off and on all day.

There were moments when it seemed like the rain had moved on and the students would be able to set up demonstrations of the work they had been doing,





but then the rain would begin again.

During breaks in the rain, I was able to walk around reading new interpretive signs and trying out the new path from the barn area to the cabins.

Books from Austin

DH returned from the archeology conference in Austin, Texas, with presents for Blaze and I, from what he described as "a really cool bookstore".

It's really a beautiful vintage copy of Tanglewood Tales.


DH also came home with a book for himself, but he didn't have to buy his book, he won it. By coming in second in the student writing competition, he won a signed copy of a book he had been wanting, but couldn't afford ( it's normally around $90).



The book about Moundville is special to DH for another reason, other than being his prize. He worked on the Moundville site back in the 1990's.

Although it is hard to tell, the guy in the white T-shirt, in this picture from the book, is DH.
