Homeschool Social Studies Fair

The Social Studies Fair is always Blaze's big school project. He puts quite a bit of time and work into his display, so there was some panic when this year's fair was scheduled for Nov. 18, instead of late January or February like it has been in past years. We both spent a lot of time on this project, me finding the materials and information and Blaze writing fact cards, coloring, cutting, and even baking.  We finished everything, except the baking, with only one day to spare.

The topic he chose this year was Vikings.

I couldn't find any barley flour in our local stores, so ended up grinding my own using the food processor.



We thought we were running late, but ended up being the first ones to arrive and set up at the Social Studies Fair.











All of the kids made amazing projects and most of them got up on the stage in front of the group to do presentations. Blaze isn't comfortable doing public speaking, but he was very good at answering questions as individuals looked at his display.

Civil Rights in the Sunshine State

 

After the homeschool International Fair on Friday, we walked over to the Museum of Florida History. Most of the museum was closed for remodeling, but the special exhibit that we were there to see was still open. Civil Rights in the Sunshine State shows the struggle for civil rights here in Florida. There were photographs, artifacts, and videos. There was also a scavenger hunt for students, to make the exhibit more engaging.





















Entry into the museum and the exhibit is free. The exhibit will be at the museum until April 5.

The Tallahassee Homeschool International Fair

Blaze finished his project about the Vietnam War yesterday.



Today, he presented it at the International Fair at the Leon County Public Library.





The board included photographs that my uncle had sent home during the war and some that DH's father had taken.

The t.v. on the right, was made from a cereal box. It held Blaze's Kindle, which was playing actual news coverage of the war. The paper to the left of the t.v. (which is hard to read, since the pencil writing doesn't show up well in photographs) says that 90% of all American households had television by 1960. The paper just below the t.v. talks about how television news affected popular opinion by bringing the horrors of war into our living rooms.

The rest of the children at the International Fair did a wide range subjects and presented them in a variety of ways. Some had boards like Blaze, some gave Power Point presentations, some even had food to share with the group.





























I'm very happy with how Blaze's display looked and am proud of him for all the writing he has done for it (writing is not easy for Blaze).

Homeschool International (Social Studies) Fair

The Tallahassee Homeschool Group hosted their annual social studies fair at the main library yesterday.

Blaze chose World War 1 as his subject.



The other children chose very diverse subjects, but they all did a fantastic job.













Many of the children also chose to do oral presentations and Power Point slide shows.









Because this group is all ages, we have many small children who began to get fidgety after a few presentations. Luckily, there was a clever parent who led everyone in a few yoga exercises, as a short intermission.



Then, back to the show.











The real sign of a focused and confident public speaker, is when she can smoothly deliver her talk, even when her little brother is dancing around on stage.
