Growing Up Steampunk

I realized yesterday, after taking pictures of Blaze in his latest steampunk costume, that this was the 5th year that we had done an autumn photo shoot of Blaze in a new steampunk costume.
It was early September of 2009, when Blaze was 8 years old, that he heard the song "Airship Pirate" by Abney Park for the first time and asked me if he could be an airship pirate for Halloween. That request resulted in these pictures being taken shortly before Halloween that year.
By the following year, he had discovered the movie Steamboy and he wanted to be Ray Steam for Halloween.
When he was 10, he asked if he could be a steampunk cowboy. As far as I know, he had never seen anything like that, he just thought it would be cool. We watched Wild Wild West and looked at the artwork of Cheyenne Wright, then came up with the Tesla Ranger costume. We also followed Robert Brown's video directions for painting stripes onto solid colored pants.
Last year's photo shoot had nothing to do with a Halloween costume, since he had decided he wanted to be a red ninja for Halloween, but was instead prompted by a story that his oldest sister had written about the airship pirates. The idea of the pirates throwing a garden party, in an attempt to fit in with their respectable neighbors, seemed like a fun idea. Also, Blaze had a new vest with matching tie from the vintage store in St. Augustine. Blaze (the story character) really enjoys things that go "boom!" and can't help showing off for the guests.
This year, we took our pictures earlier than usual, because I thought it would be nice if Blaze had one new costume to wear to Dragon*Con (Labor Day weekend). This is the inventor's costume:

There was more than one new look in 2014.
There was summer beachwear and the Steam PUNK costume.
At the Georgia Aquarium during DragonCon:
In 2015, there were no new steampunk costumes, because the ones from previous years still fit. He did, however, discover a new steampunk sport, Splendid Teapot Racing.
His Halloween costume that year was Scrooloose from Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.
In 2016, the Tesla Ranger costume got an update, with a new hat, new leather coat, and bolo tie.
A warm weather look:
A sudden growth spirt in 2017 meant all of his pants needed replacing.

This year, he sewed his first article of clothing, a tan vest, to be worn as part of his Florida Tea Scouts uniform.

The State of Steampunk in the Sunshine State
Three years ago, I created a blog post called "Fifty-Five Fabulous Faces of Florida Steampunk". It was inspired by two things, a person telling me that steampunk wouldn't work in Florida, because it was too hot here to wear elaborate costumes, and seeing the same dozen or so faces every time a national article about steampunk appeared on my newsfeed. Since April was the thirtieth anniversary of K.W. Jeter coining the term "steampunk," I thought it was time to repost that old article on the Florida steampunk Facebook pages, but quickly realized that it needed an update. Much has changed since May of 2014.
It is the nature of the World to be in a constant state of flux. Some of the current fabulous faces of Florida steampunk have remained the same over the years, but some of our most active and skilled members have moved on to new, more demanding jobs that have taken them away from us or moved to other states. Many new members have moved to Florida or discovered steampunk, bringing with them the energy and fresh ideas of new converts. The community has continued to evolve and grow over the past three years, but through all these changes, it has continued to be a wonderfully inclusive group, with participants of all ages and backgrounds.
The current steampunk state of the state is that there are now so many fabulous faces that I couldn't do justice to this subject with just fifty-five representatives. This is still only a small sampling, but I lost count somewhere around 130.

Entertainment with a steampunk theme has become more diverse and widespread in Florida in recent years.
The sport of Splendid Teapot Racing came to Florida in Oct. of 2015, when we held our first race at Renninger's Steampunk Industrial Show in Mount Dora. Since then, it has spread to events around the state.

The Cog is Dead is a very eclectic band. Although their songs tell steampunk stories, the musical styles of the songs vary widely, borrowing from every possible genre.

Escape the Clouds is a one man band that uses modern electronic instruments to tell vintage stories.

Phantasmagoria is an acting and dancing troupe. Their combination of fire performance, dance, and story telling makes them a wonder to behold. Beautiful ladies, handsome gentlemen, music, and fire... what more could you ask for? How about spine tingling stories? They have that, too.
